Unable to connect to Vectrino II Profiler

Posted by Rnadula Senarathbandara at December 20. 2018

We are unable to connect to our Vectrino II profiler (cabled-down looking).  We were able to connect a year or so ago, but for some reason it is not working now. We are using the Vectrino v1.22.00 software.  We have a side looking Vectrino that seems to connect fine.  Here are the steps we took to trouble shoot so far.

·         Removed housing and checked fuse (0.2 ohm)

·         Removed housing and checked circuit board light and it is solid green

·         Tried three different computers

·         Tried a different serial/USB adapter

·         Tried to connect directly to a serial port on another computer

·         Tried the functional cable from the side looking Vectrino on the down looking Vectrino

·         Searched for software updates and firmware updates

Is there anything you can suggest for us to try?  Is there a driver that needs to be updated?  The only thing we can think of is that the firmware for the probe is not compatible (updated) with the software, but there are no recent firmware upgrades online.

Thank you for your time in advance!

Hi Rnadula:
For future reference, this forum isn't actively monitored any more.  Using the online support is likely to provide you with a better response time.

If the board is showning green, then that's an indication that everything is OK on that side.  Are you using the same cable and serial USB converter that came with the Profiler? Neither the cable nor the converter are the same as those used by the single point Vectrino.  The Vectrino Profiler uses RS-422 not RS-232 (needed for the higher data rates).

In terms of software / firmware, the latest version is 1.32, available from this web pagehttps://www.nortekgroup.com/software

Incompatible firmware / software will connect, but show an error message, so the problem seems to be at the hardware level rather than the software.

   Hope that helps,
       Robert Craig.

Thank you Robert.
We are using this (image attached) USB serial adapter. Do you think that the issue is with the adapter?

That looks like the correct converter.  If you're using the correct cable and you have the latest drivers installed, then it would at least seem possible that the converter is the issue.  We have very occasionally seen converters stop working so it may be worthwhile contacting your instrument supplier to see if a spare one is available.

For information, the Vectrino Profiler does output the string "Nortek Scientific Vectrino-II Feb 27 2015 12:31:07 Profiler (1.32/2779)" when first powered on.  You may be able to hook up an oscilloscope to the Tx output on the cable to make sure that something is getting through to the converter to check the cabling.
